Fees and steps checked on
UK marriage certificate attestation for the UAE is what you need to sponsor your husband or wife on a UAE family visa. The certificate issued by a UK register office goes to the FCDO for legalisation, then to the UAE Embassy in London, which attests it digitally together with MOFA. Because it is a public registry document, it does not need a solicitor first.
Price: standard service from AED 985 plus VAT (22 to 24 working days), express from AED 1,200 (18 working days) or premium from AED 1,600 (12 to 14 working days), all official fees and courier included. See attestation fees.
Who issues a UK marriage certificate
UK marriage certificates are certified copies of the marriage register. In England and Wales they come from the local register office or the General Register Office, in Scotland from National Records of Scotland, and in Northern Ireland from the General Register Office there. The certificate handed to you on the day is one of these copies, and you can order more at any time.
Why you need it in the UAE
- Sponsoring a spouse. Dubai's residency authority (GDRFA) and the federal ICP ask for an attested marriage certificate before a spouse residence visa is issued. The sponsor also has to meet an income rule, about AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus housing.
- Sponsoring children. The marriage certificate often goes in together with the UK birth certificate attestation, so both parents' link to the child is clear.
- Name changes. If your passport shows a married name but your degree shows your maiden name, the attested marriage certificate connects the two.

UK marriage certificate attestation step by step
- Check the certificate. It must be a registry-issued certificate, not a photocopy, and not laminated.
- FCDO legalisation. The FCDO verifies the registrar's signature or seal and attaches its apostille.
- UAE Embassy London and MOFA. The application goes through the MOFA portal, an approved provider collects the certificate in the UK, and the embassy and MOFA attestation are added digitally, usually in 2 to 3 working days.
- Delivery. The digitally attested certificate arrives by email, and the paper certificate returns by courier.

The FCDO's own published fees (gov.uk, 2025) are £45 for standard postal legalisation, £40 for the next-day service (registered businesses only) and £100 for urgent (also business only), and all of them are covered by our price. Most of the waiting is at the FCDO. The embassy and MOFA step adds about 2 to 3 working days.
What to send us
- A clear photo of the certificate on WhatsApp, so we can confirm it is a registry-issued certificate and quote one total price.
- The certificate itself, or a fresh certified copy from the register office or General Register Office. The paper copy goes to the UK and returns by courier, and we only ask for it once you decide to go ahead.
- The ID page of both passports, so the names can be compared with the certificate.
- A name-change document if either spouse's name now differs, such as a deed poll.
- The date your spouse visa is due.
Pickup and delivery across Dubai are free. When the attestation is done, you can check it at verify.mofa.gov.ae.
Common problems and how to avoid them
- Married outside the UK. A wedding in Cyprus, Italy or Las Vegas produces a certificate from that country, which follows that country's chain. See marriage certificate attestation for the general route.
- Worn or damaged certificates. Folded, torn or laminated copies cause delays. A new certified copy from the register office is often faster than arguing over an old one.
- Names that do not match passports. Spelling differences between the certificate and both passports are a common reason for visa queries. Check before the certificate leaves your hands.
- Waiting until the visa is due. The UK stage is the slow part. Start as soon as the move is confirmed.
Every other UK document follows the same pattern, set out on the UK certificate attestation page.
