US marriage certificate attestation for the UAE lets you sponsor your husband or wife on a UAE family visa. You start with a certified copy from the county clerk or the state vital records office, which the Secretary of State of that state authenticates, then the US Department of State, then the UAE Embassy, which attests it digitally together with MOFA. Plan for about 7 weeks.

Price: AED 1,025 per document plus VAT, about 1 month and 3 weeks, all official fees included. Only a clear scanned copy is needed, so you keep your original. See attestation fees.

Who issues a US marriage certificate

Marriages in the US are recorded locally. The certified copy comes from the county clerk or county recorder where the license was issued, or from the state's vital records office. That certified copy carries an official's signature and seal, which is what the Secretary of State can authenticate. The keepsake certificate signed at the ceremony is not an official record.

Why you need it in the UAE

  • Spouse visa. Dubai's GDRFA and the federal ICP ask for an attested marriage certificate before a spouse residence visa is issued. The sponsor also needs to meet an income rule of about AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus housing.
  • Children's visas. Families usually attest the marriage certificate with the US birth certificate attestation for each child.
  • Name changes. It links a married name on your passport to a maiden name on a degree or employment record.

The full checklist is on documents to attest for a UAE family visa.

US marriage certificate attestation step by step

  1. Order a certified copy. From the county clerk or recorder, or the state vital records office, in the state where you married.
  2. Secretary of State. The Secretary of State of that state authenticates the official's signature.
  3. US Department of State. The Office of Authentications adds its certificate, filed on form DS-4194.
  4. UAE Embassy and MOFA, digital. The application is filed on the MOFA portal and VFS Global, which handles document attestation for the UAE Embassy in Washington, receives the certificate. The embassy and MOFA attestation are added together, usually in 2 to 3 working days.
  5. Delivery. You receive the digitally attested certificate by email.

What to send us

  • A clear colour scan of the certified copy from the county clerk, county recorder or state vital records office, with the signature and seal readable. You keep the original.
  • The state and county where the marriage was recorded.
  • If you only have the ceremony certificate or the licence, tell us. A certified copy must be ordered first.
  • The ID page of both passports, plus a name-change document if either name differs.
  • The date your spouse visa is due.

Everything is handled from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, with no trip to the US.

Common problems and how to avoid them

  • Ceremony certificate sent instead of the record. It cannot be authenticated. Order the certified copy first.
  • Married in one state, living in another. The certified copy and the Secretary of State must both belong to the state where the marriage was recorded.
  • Bundled documents. Bundled apostilles are not accepted. Each certificate is processed on its own.
  • Married outside the US. A certificate from another country follows that country's chain, even for US citizens. See marriage certificate attestation.
  • Starting too late. With about 5 weeks at the Department of State, start as soon as the move is confirmed.

Once attested, the certificate can be checked at verify.mofa.gov.ae with the reference number and issue date, and it is accepted in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the other emirates.

Questions people ask

How much does US marriage certificate attestation cost?

From AED 1,025 plus VAT, with the US Department of State fee, the UAE Embassy and MOFA fees and courier included.

How long does it take to attest a US marriage certificate for the UAE?

About 7 weeks. The US Department of State stage alone takes about 5 weeks for mailed requests.

Which copy of my US marriage certificate should I use?

A certified copy issued by the county clerk or recorder, or by the state vital records office. Decorative certificates signed at the ceremony and plain photocopies cannot be authenticated.

Is my marriage license enough?

No. A license is permission to marry. The UAE needs the certified record showing that the marriage took place.

Do I need an attested marriage certificate to sponsor my spouse in Dubai?

Yes. Dubai's residency authority asks for an attested marriage certificate for a spouse visa, and the federal ICP route for the other emirates asks for the same.

Can I attest the marriage certificate and my children's birth certificates together?

Yes. Each one is a separate document with its own fees, but they can move through the chain at the same time.

Do I need a MOFA stamp in the UAE afterwards?

No. On the digital route the UAE Embassy and MOFA attest the certificate together, so it is ready for use when you receive it.

What do I need to send for US marriage certificate attestation?

A clear colour scan of the certified copy, the state and county where you married, both passport ID pages and your visa date. Add a name-change document only if names differ.
