If the name on your certificate does not match your passport, you need a linking document, not a new attestation. Attestation confirms seals and signatures; the name check comes later, at the visa office, employer or ministry. A one and the same person affidavit, a marriage certificate or an attested name change deed closes the gap.
What counts as a name mismatch?
Small differences cause more refused files than people expect. These are the usual cases and the document that normally fixes each one.
| Mismatch | Example | Usual linking document |
|---|---|---|
| Spelling variant | Mohammed on the degree, Muhammad in the passport | One and the same person affidavit |
| Married name | Maiden surname on the degree, married surname in the passport | Attested marriage certificate |
| Missing surname | Given name only on the certificate, full name in the passport | One and the same person affidavit |
| Initials | R. K. Sharma on the certificate, full names in the passport | One and the same person affidavit |
| Changed order | Surname first on one document, last on the other | Affidavit, if the receiving office asks |
| Legal name change | New name by deed poll, gazette or court order | Attested name change deed |
What do MOFA and the visa authorities actually check?
The attestation chain checks that each stamp came from the right authority: the university or registry, the foreign ministry, the UAE embassy and MOFA. None of these steps rewrites the document, so the name stays exactly as it was printed.
The comparison with your passport happens at the next stage:
- Family visa. GDRFA asks for an attested birth certificate and a certified marriage contract. If a parent's name on a child's birth certificate differs from that parent's passport, the file needs something that links the two. See documents to attest for a family visa.
- Work permit. For skilled roles, the attested degree goes into the work permit file, and the employer's PRO checks it against your passport.
- Recognition. For MoHESR recognition and Dataflow verification, the name on the degree, transcript and passport should line up. Our equivalency certificate guide covers that route.
Each office decides what it accepts. Ask the one handling your file which linking document it wants before you prepare anything.
The one and the same person affidavit
This is the most common fix for spelling variants, initials and missing surnames. It is a sworn statement saying that every listed name refers to you.
A typical affidavit includes:
- Your full name exactly as it appears in your passport, with the passport number
- Each other version of your name, and the document where it appears
- Your date and place of birth and your parents' names, as further identifiers
- A plain statement that all these names belong to one and the same person
- The purpose, such as a UAE residence visa or employment
Where to swear it. If the office in the UAE accepts a local document, a Dubai notary can attest your signature under Executive Council Resolution No. 72 of 2025. Some embassies also help their own nationals: the Embassy of India in the UAE attests affidavits, and the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi publishes a form for a certification for one and the same person. If the office wants a home country affidavit, it is sworn there and then goes through the full chain. Details are on affidavit attestation and notary public in Dubai.
Name change deed attestation
When your name changed legally, the proof of that change is what links the old and new names.
- United Kingdom. A deed poll proves a change of name. You can make an unenrolled one yourself, or put the change on public record through the High Court with an enrolled deed poll. Some organisations only accept an enrolled one.
- India. A name change is commonly published in the Gazette of India, backed by an affidavit and a newspaper notice. See India certificate attestation for the Indian chain.
- Court orders. A court-sealed order usually goes straight to the foreign ministry without a notary step, as the UK FCDO rules show for court documents.
To be used in the UAE, the deed follows the same route as other private documents:
- Certify the deed with a notary or solicitor in the country where it was made.
- Foreign ministry legalisation, such as the FCDO apostille in the UK.
- UAE embassy attestation, which on the digital route also includes MOFA.
- Keep it with the certificate whose name it explains, every time you submit the file.
Married names and the marriage certificate
A degree or birth certificate in a maiden name is linked to a married-name passport by the marriage certificate. If you also need the marriage certificate for a family visa, attest it once and use it for both. See marriage certificate attestation.
Fix the name before or after attestation?
Before, whenever the issuer can correct the original. A university that reissues a certificate with the right spelling gives you a new document, and any stamps on the old one do not carry over. Ask for the correction first, then attest the corrected certificate once. If the issuer will not change it, attest the document as it is and add the linking document.
How we help
We are a private document service in Bur Dubai, not MOFA and not a government office. Send photos of your passport page and the certificate on WhatsApp. We tell you which linking document your case needs, prepare the affidavit wording for the notary, and take any document through its stamps. You get the total price, all official fees included, before any work starts. See attestation fees.
