Fees and steps checked on
Ethiopia certificate attestation makes an Ethiopian degree, school certificate, birth certificate or marriage certificate valid for a job, a residence visa or school admission in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah. Ethiopia has no apostille. The issuing body or the Education and Training Authority checks the document, the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs authenticates it, the UAE Embassy in Addis Ababa attests it, and MOFA attestation completes it.
Price: send a copy on WhatsApp and you get the total price plus VAT, all official fees included, before any work starts. Most Ethiopian files also need translation from Amharic, which is included in the quote. See attestation fees.
The Ethiopian route
- Issuer verification. Ethiopian sources are consistent on this: the foreign ministry will not authenticate a document the issuer has not verified first.
- Degrees from local institutions: the Education and Training Authority (ETA), or the university registrar for universities such as Addis Ababa University.
- Grade 10 and grade 12 certificates: the national examination agency.
- Civil documents: the civil registration office that issued them.
- Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Authentication in Addis Ababa.
- UAE Embassy in Addis Ababa. Attests the Ethiopian ministry stamp. Ethiopia is not on the VFS Global list for UAE attestation, and we could not read a published embassy procedure, so the current UAE-side step is confirmed when you send a copy.
- MOFA in the UAE. The final stamp, unless the embassy step already includes it digitally.

Amharic and the Ethiopian calendar
Two things make Ethiopian files different from most others:
- Language. Many Ethiopian civil documents are in Amharic. MOFA accepts Arabic or English only, so these need a legal translation by a translator licensed by the UAE Ministry of Justice. Degrees are often already in English.
- Dates. Ethiopian documents often follow the Ethiopian calendar, about seven to eight years behind the Gregorian one. A birth year on the certificate can look like a mismatch with your passport. The translation must show the converted Gregorian date so the visa office sees the same date of birth everywhere.
Names on Ethiopian documents
Ethiopians usually carry a given name, the father's name and the grandfather's name, without a family surname. UAE systems may treat the father's name as a surname. That is normal, but the same order must appear on the translation, the passport and the visa. Send a passport copy with the file.
Already working in the UAE?
Many Ethiopians in Dubai and Abu Dhabi need a degree attested for a better job or a birth certificate for a child's visa. You do not need to travel. The original goes to Addis Ababa, passes through the verification and the ministry, then the UAE side, and comes back. MOFA lets anyone apply for you.
How long it takes
The UAE side is the short part. Issuer verification and the Ethiopian foreign ministry take longer, and a degree needing ETA authentication takes longer than a birth certificate. Translation in the UAE adds a few days at the end. Your full timeline is given with the quote.
If you also studied, married or had a child in Eritrea, the steps for those papers are on Eritrea certificate attestation.
Common problems with Ethiopian files
- Skipping issuer verification. The ministry returns the document unstamped.
- Untranslated dates. A translation that copies the Ethiopian year without conversion causes questions at immigration.
- Lamination. MOFA does not attest laminated papers.
For a child's visa, see birth certificate attestation; for work, degree certificate attestation.
What to send us
Send a photo of each document and your passport photo page first. We then tell you the route, whether translation is needed and the total price. For the full file we need the original, not laminated, plus the transcript for a degree. The original leaves your hands and travels through the chain, so we agree the plan with you before it moves.
Who needs Ethiopian attestation in the UAE
- Graduates whose degree is asked for by a UAE employer or a work permit
- Parents who need a birth certificate for a child's residence visa or school place
- Couples who need a marriage certificate to sponsor a spouse
- Workers who need a school certificate for a training place or a licence
How to check the result
The finished document should carry the Ethiopian ministry authentication, the UAE embassy attestation and the MOFA stamp. Verify the MOFA stamp at verify.mofa.gov.ae. Keep the translation attached to the original, because the stamps cover them as one file.
