Fees and steps checked on
New Zealand marriage certificate attestation turns a New Zealand marriage certificate into a document UAE visa offices accept, mainly for sponsoring a spouse. It runs through three offices: the New Zealand government authentication service (Category A for the UAE), the UAE Embassy in Wellington, and MOFA attestation in the UAE. You and your spouse stay in the UAE throughout.
Price: New Zealand has no fixed price on our list. Send a copy on WhatsApp and you get the total price, all official fees included, before any work starts. See attestation fees.
Category A: what it means for your certificate
New Zealand sorts destination countries into categories. The UAE is Category A, which means New Zealand issues an authentication certificate, not an apostille, and the UAE embassy then legalises it. This matters: ordering an apostille instead leaves you with a certificate the UAE will not accept. Our attestation vs apostille guide explains the difference.
When couples need it
A spouse visa is the usual trigger. GDRFA in Dubai asks for a certified marriage contract, and ICP asks for an attested one, before it will issue residence to a husband or wife. Check the full list in documents to attest for a UAE family visa. Family medical cover and some housing paperwork in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah also ask for proof of marriage.
How a New Zealand marriage certificate is attested
- Confirm it is the registered certificate. Many couples hold only the certificate signed on the day. That keepsake is not the registered record, so we check your photo first.
- Notary, if your certificate needs one. We tell you from the photo.
- Authentication in New Zealand. Completed within 15 working days after verification. If your deadline is tight and you are eligible, the urgent service is within 5 working days.
- UAE Embassy, Wellington. Legalisation.
- MOFA. With digital attestation, the Wellington and MOFA stamps reach you together.
- Hand it to GDRFA or ICP with the rest of the visa file.
Timing against your visa deadline
| Stage | Office | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Standard authentication | NZ government authentication service | within 15 working days |
| Urgent authentication | NZ government authentication service | within 5 working days |
| Legalisation | UAE Embassy, Wellington | stated in your quote |
| Final attestation | MOFA, UAE | stated in your quote |
Add courier time between New Zealand and the UAE. If your spouse's entry permit or grace period is running, tell us the date on your first message so we can judge whether the urgent option is worth it.
Before you send it
- The registered New Zealand marriage certificate (original)
- Copies of both passports
- Any document that links different surnames, if one of you changed name
Where New Zealand marriage files go wrong
- Sending the ceremony certificate. The most common mix-up.
- Buying an apostille online. Wrong product for the UAE.
- Leaving it too late. Fifteen working days in New Zealand alone can collide with a visa deadline.
Further reasons are covered in why attestation gets rejected, and the embassy step is explained in UAE embassy attestation.
