Lao documents for the UAE

Laos certificate attestation for the UAE

Laos has no apostille and no resident UAE embassy. Your Lao document is legalised by the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then attested by the UAE mission accredited to Laos, then by MOFA.

Fees and steps checked on

Laos certificate attestation makes a Lao birth certificate, marriage certificate, diploma or business paper valid for use in the UAE. Laos is outside the Hague Apostille Convention and has no resident UAE embassy, so the route is: issuing office, the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vientiane, the UAE mission accredited to Laos, then MOFA attestation in the UAE.

Price: send a copy on WhatsApp and you get the total price plus VAT, all official fees included, before any work starts. See attestation fees.

A non-resident UAE ambassador

The UAE covers Laos from abroad. In February 2024 Dr Bader Abdullah Al Matroushi presented his credentials in Vientiane as the UAE's non-resident ambassador to Laos. Published lists place that accreditation with the UAE Embassy in Hanoi, which also handles Vietnam certificate attestation, but MOFA has no attestation page confirming it. For that reason we confirm the current mission step for your document before the original is posted anywhere.

Route for Lao documents

  1. Issuing office. Civil registry, school, university, court or notary in Laos.
  2. Translation. Lao text is translated by a sworn translator. Official Dutch government guidance describes translating in Laos and having the original and translation legalised together, or legalising first and translating abroad.
  3. Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Legalises the signature on the document.
  4. UAE mission accredited to Laos. Attests the ministry stamp. UAE fees are paid through the MOFA system.
  5. MOFA in the UAE. The MOFA fee is included in our total.

The Lao language step

MOFA reads Arabic and English only. A Lao-script certificate therefore always needs a legally certified translation, and the translation must match the name spelling in your passport, because Lao names can be romanised in several ways. If the receiving UAE office wants Arabic, we arrange legal translation in Dubai after the stamps are complete.

What Lao documents are used for

Lao document Typical use in the UAE
Birth certificate Residence visa for a child, school enrolment
Marriage certificate Spouse visa, family sponsorship
University diploma and transcript Work permit, professional licence
Business registration Opening a branch or trading with a UAE company

Laos compared with its neighbours

Thailand and Vietnam each have their own UAE embassy, so their documents stay inside one country. Lao documents are different because the UAE stamp comes from outside Laos, which adds courier time. If you hold a Thai document as well, its route is on Thailand certificate attestation.

Working from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah

Someone in Laos takes the original to the ministry. The UAE stage can then be done without you, as MOFA accepts applications filed on someone else's behalf.

Avoid these

  • Translating after the UAE stamp when the ministry expected a translation with the original.
  • Romanising your name differently from your passport.
  • Laminating the certificate. MOFA will not accept it.
  • Sending a photocopy of a civil record. Birth and marriage certificates travel as originals.

Questions people ask

Is there a UAE embassy in Vientiane?

No resident one that we could find. The UAE is represented in Laos by a non-resident ambassador, who presented credentials in Vientiane in February 2024. We confirm the mission that applies the UAE stamp when you send a copy.

How much does Laos certificate attestation cost?

Send a copy on WhatsApp and you get the total price plus VAT, all official fees included, before any work starts.

Does a Lao document need translation?

Yes, if it is in Lao. MOFA accepts Arabic or English, or a legally certified translation.

Can Laos issue an apostille?

No. Laos is not on the Hague Apostille table, and the UAE is not a member either.

Who starts the process in Laos?

The issuing office gives you the document, then the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs legalises it. Foreign embassy guidance describes this as the first legalisation.

Can I organise this from the UAE?

Yes. A relative or courier handles the Vientiane step with the original, and MOFA allows anyone to apply on your behalf in the UAE.
